There is still controversy as to what exactly might have led to the death of Gabe Smalls, an upcoming rap artiste from Tema, a suburb of Accra. News broke last week that 21-year old Smalls had committed suicide because his lover had dumped him. The rumour behind his death spread like wild-fire and it has almost become accepted as the cause of Gabe’s death though police reports have not confirmed this. His facebook page, Gabe Smalls, became inundated with “Rest In Peace” messages from friends and sympathizers, with some even claiming that Gabe had written a suicide note in which he threatened to ‘end it all’.

Reports say on 22nd November, 2011 Gabe updated his facebook status with what looked like a suicide note: “Seeing the one you love someone else is like having a dove in a cage…you love it soo much, you do everything to make sure its safe and happy, but deep within it wants to fly away, so nothing you do pleases it…You just got to let it go, mourn it as if it was dead and let da pain it left you, Go.” He was also reported to have left a note which read: “Sorry but had to end the pain I was going through. Please don’t blame yourself” after which he went to church on Sunday and ended his life after the service.
