“I Am A Witch”– Kyeiwaa confesses

Popular Akan actress Rose Akua Attaa Mensah, also known as Kyeiwaa, has for the first time declared publicly that she is a real witch, after playing her claim to fame role as Kyeiwaa in a movie titled “Kyeiwaa” which was later turned into a sequel.

Kyeiwaa said this as part of her acceptance speech at the just ended second edition of Ghana Movie Awards, when she won the award for ‘Best Actress In Supporting Role (Local Language) at the Accra International Conference Centre, on Christmas day December 25, 2011. She said she is a witch but she is not the only person in the movie industry who is a witch.

The hilarious actress went ahead to mention the names of two veteran Ghanaian actresses Grace Omaboe, popularly known as Maame Dokono, and Grace Nortey also known as Obaa genge describing them as senior witches, adding that they are responsible for her witch craft.

She said before she came into the industry she really admired the two of them and fortunately they both handed over their witch craft to her, before they stopped active acting.

Kyeiwaa who showed a few steps of the ‘azonto’ dance when her name was announced, walked on stage dancing and after she received the award she raised it up and said “Yes I am a witch but the real witches are Grace Nortey and Maame Dokono. The two of them were the real witches in the movie industry before I became a witch”, on stage as the audience screamed in shock.

She went on to explain why and how that happened. Kyeiwaa said, she admired both of them from afar before she even came into acting. “Anytime I saw them on screen, I was overwhelmed, not knowing that they were going to hand over their witchcraft to me”. She raised the award and shouted “So the witchcraft Grace Nortey and Maame Dokono gave me is what I have in my hands right now. This is it everybody should look at it”.

Rose Mensah also thanked the organizers for organizing the event, and thanked God for winning the award. Before Kyeiwaa accepted the awards, she insisted that her grandchildren should come on stage, and she waited for her two granddaughters to walk from where they were seated in the audience to join her on stage, before she received the award which was presented to her by PY Addo Boateng of Viasat 1.

“I want the photographers and all the cameras to take shots of me and my grandchildren”, Kyeiwaa said as she posed with her grandchildren and the award.

Rose Akua Attaa, a single parent of two girls, got into acting some fifteen years ago, and her magnificent way of interpreting roles given to her in movies are so vivid that the audience is often carried away from an imaginary ground into absolute paranoia.

Since the movie ‘Kyeiwaa’ was released, many people seem to have forgotten that Kyeiwaa who is largely perceived as a wicked woman has also played good-hearted roles in movies like “Akonoba”, “Cross Road”, “Abebrese” and “Ogyam” which were all big hits.

Now, Akua Attaa whose favourite food is Fufu and light soup, has starred in various movies still making a section of Ghanaians believe that she is indeed an agent of the Devil and yet she has won the hearts and captured her attention of its audiences through her splendid performances.

Even though Kyeiwaa has stated several times that her role as a witch in the movie has affected her religion and how she is seen in church, she is not perturbed at all because to her, the most important people in her career are her fans and how she entertains them.
